Task-Switching Training App

INTRODUCTION

This task-switching training app was developed based on the training model developed by Karbach and Kray (2009). This training can stimulate the prefrontal cortex of the brain which in turn enhances task-switching and other executive function skills.

Task-switching is one of the executive function skills – the ability to rapidly and accurately switch attention from one task to another.

TARGET

Primary students from low-income families

FEATURES

  • An hourglass indicating the time remaining to complete each block.

  • A total of 24 blocks in training session, with 45-60 mins duration.

  • Food vs. size tasks

  • Transport vs. number tasks

  • Hobby vs colour tasks

How to play?

In the game interface, players need to pay close attention and respond as quickly as accurately as possible. For example, decide whether the picture shows a fruit or a vegetable (food task) and whether the picture is large or small (size task) by clicking the correct button. This training requires high levels of concentration and mental flexibility to complete the tasks.

EVIDENCE-BASED TASK-SWITCHING TRAINING

Several studies demonstrate that computerised training programmes can facilitate the prefrontal cortex of the brain, which can significantly improve executive function (Gaál & Czigler, 2018; Kray et al., 2012; Zhao et al., 2018). The strength of this training is that it can stimulate the relevant areas of the brain accurately. In Karbach and Kray’s (2009) study, they conducted four 1-hour training sessions using a computerised task-switching training for 56 children and found a significant improvement in children’s executive function. More recently, Poon et al.’s (2020) research also found that the app training group showed improved performance in similar (untrained task-switching) and dissimilar inhibition tasks following a 4-week period. The findings have been published in the Journal of Cognitive Psychology. Please click here.

The task-switching training app won the silver medal for educational technology innovation at the Silicon Valley International Invention Festival (SVIIF) 2019. It was also showcased at EdUHK Award Winning Innovation Salon 2019.
