Executive Function

What is Executive Function?

  • Executive function (EF) is becoming increasingly important for success in research.

    • EF involves cognitive processes that control thoughts and actions.

    • EF is like an orchestra conductor who sets the rhythm and ensures that all the performers follow the same beat.

    • EF is a collection of multiple cognitive abilities that work together.

    • These abilities include working memory, inhibition, and flexibility.

    • These abilities involved in tasks such as planning, organizing, remembering, and controlling emotions and behaviors.

  • There are two types of EF: cool and hot.

    • Cool executive function is related to learning effectiveness.

    • Hot executive function is related to behavioral and emotional control.

Who are at risk?

  • These skills are often atypical in students with ADHD, reading difficulties, and autism spectrum disorders.

  • Difficulties in planning, remembering, and organizing tasks can result from atypical executive function skills.

Executive Function Trainings

Of course, executive function can be trained and improved with practice and cognitive training. Although congenital differences among individuals do exist, executive function can also be nurtured through training; the more we use certain brain functions, the better the neural connections become. This is similar to physical exercise – more training improves muscular strength. Our brain is the most powerful “muscle” in our neuropsychological system.
